March 2022 - Another season complete!

We didn't have quite as many Covid restrictions to work around this winter, which meant we were able to involve lots of our lovely community volunteers. It's been another successful season of planting trees, meeting new people and looking after our green spaces!

To date, we've planted nearly 6000 trees in Spondon. We're halfway to our target! A large portion of our trees planted in 2021, went towards our large project with the local secondary school. In December 2021, in conjunction with West Park School in Spondon and a whole heap of volunteers, we planted 2500 trees on their playing field. We were helped by West Park students and teachers, pre-school children from Kingfisher, as well as primary school children from St Werburghs and Springfield. We were also joined by dozens of volunteers from the village, as well as the business Tidyco.

In early 2022, we also planted three larger trees on the same field, in order to give the area more impact and also to form part of the Queen's Canopy. We planted a large Walnut tree, Ash and an Oak tree - now officially named 'The Spondon Oak'.

To get an idea of the scale of the West Park project, and the sheer size of the field we planted on, check out this video:

Our planting for this season has now finished, as the trees start to wake up from their dormant periods. We're looking forward to seeing lots of growth and watching the new areas develop!

Over the spring and summer, we'll be fundraising and planning our locations for the next planting season. As always, a HUGE THANK to you anybody who has helped us. Do please get in touch if you'd like to volunteer with us, or if you've spotted an area in the village that could do with some trees :-)
